2. Messiah Is Both God And Man
(Isaiah 9:5[6], Psalm 45:2,6)
“Father of eternity” is not the only divine name given to the Messiah.
In the verse where we read this name, the prophet gives him also other amazing names:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; And the government shall be upon his shoulder And his name shall be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty G-d, Everlasting Father*, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end On the throne of David and over his kingdom…
Isaiah 9:5-6 (6-7) ESV
* literally “Father of eternity”
In the book of Isaiah it is HASHEM who “is wonderful in counsel” is (Isaiah 28:29, 25:1) and just one chapter later the Mighty G-d is identified with HASHEM.
We read that the survivors of the house of Jacob “will lean on HASHEM, the Holy one of Israel in truth. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the Mighty G-d” (Isaiah 10:22,23 ESV)
And let’s consider what we read in Psalm 45:
Your throne, O G-d is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; you loved righteousness and hated wickedness…
If we would read this verse in isolation we would simply think it is a statement about G-d. However, this is how the Psalm continues—
Therefore G-d, Your G-d has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions..
Psalm 45 is about a special anointed king; it is about the King-Messiah.
And why is it that in the book of Jeremiah Messiah is called “HASHEM our righteousness”? (Jeremiah 23:6 NKJV)
If the Tanakh can say all these things about the Messiah it means that he is not only human but also divine. Mysteriously he is both at the same time!
