Isn't There More To Life Than This?

We just live our lives, We enjoy things, we grieve over things, maybe we even achieve quite a lot. But in the end, for what? Maybe you are asking this question. Maybe this question is haunting you.

“Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return,” (Ecclesiastes 3:19-20). Is that it? Are we as the French philosopher Voltaire put it just “tormented atoms in a bed of mud devoured by death”?

But if we are just atoms, isn’t it strange that these atoms can feel tormented? If we are just a temporal arrangement of molecules, a mere product of chance, isn’t it strange that being or feeling meaningless can bother these molecules? Is it maybe because we are indeed more than that? Are we maybe meant for more than only toiling a few years under the sun? Is it maybe true what Qohelet says, “God has set eternity in the hearts of men,” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

The Bible tells us there is more, indeed. There is a God and we are created to know Him, to enjoy Him and reflect His goodness in thankfulness and praise. We were made for life in his presence, finding deep satisfaction in Him. This is how king David said it, “In Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore,”

But the sad reality which casts a dark shadow of meaninglessness and death over our lives, is that our relationship with God is seriously damaged and broken. (Psalm 16:11).

In the midst of this, there is good news. God has gone to great lengths to restore our relationship with Him. He sent the promised Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus). In Him, God demonstrates His love for us. The punishment that provides us peace and wholeness was upon Him (Isaiah 53:5). When we look to Yeshua, we look straight into the face of the reason for life.
